Acquired by UTMB in 1996, Rebecca Sealy Hospital is named in memory of the wife of John Sealy I. It houses UTMB’s day surgery center. The day surgery center has 6 operating rooms and performs a wide array of cases including pediatric dental restorations, orthopedic procedures, colonoscopies, and ophthalmologic surgeries.
PGY4 residents will rotate through RSH Day Surgery Center. For more information see http://www.utmb.edu/tour/5.htm.
“Rebecca Sealy Hospital (RSH) is UTMB's Day Surgery Center. The hospital is located across the street from John Sealy hospital. Patients are private patients that are operated on by faculty surgeons. A variety of cases including ophthalmologic, gynecologic, orthopedic, plastics and pediatric dental procedures are performed at RSH.
Residents have more autonomy in RSH and get the feel for a private practice setting. A typical day begins around 6:30am with room setup. There is a preop clinic in RSH where patients are evaluated for procedures in the upcoming month. Both faculty and residents see patients in the clinic. The clinic closes at 2pm, and most days, cases end before 3pm.This rotation simulates a private practice surgery center and it is one of the senior residents’ favorite rotations.”
