Resident Benefits

The Department provides all Anesthesiology residents with:

  • Up to $100 reimbursement for protective eyewear
  • Clinical Anesthesiology textbook, eds: Morgan, Mikhail and Murray
  • Lab coats and a digital pager

Educational Fund: $3,000 ($750 / year) will be allocated to each resident’s Resident Education Account (REA). REA funds are generally used for medical books, subscriptions, PDA, and travel to approved professional meetings.

ABA Written Board Examination: fee reimbursed ($950) for PGY-4 residents

USMLE: The department will reimburse for USMLE Step 3 if taken and passed before the end of PGY-1 year or PGY-2 for residents entering as CA-1.

Medical License Renewal or Temporary Institutional Permit Fees: All residents must have either a Texas medical license or an institutional permit. We reimburse renewal fees once for the Texas license or pay annual permit fees.

Professional Membership Dues: We pay membership dues to the American Society of Anesthesiologists, Texas Society of Anesthesiologists, International Anesthesia Research Society, and the Texas Medical Association. With these memberships, residents receive two monthly journals, Anesthesiology and Anesthesia and Analgesia

On-call Meal Tickets: $9.00 per in-house call

UTMB Alumni Field House: Residents can enjoy the UTMB Alumni Field House for reduced fee.

Vacation, Sick Leave, Meeting Time

  • Vacation: 15 days of paid vacation (3 weeks) per year
  • USMLE Examination: administrative leave allowed
  • Meeting Time: 5 working days during the PGY-4 year
  • Additional meeting time granted if presenting at meetings
